How To Manage The Aftermath Of A Storm

Although some areas of South Florida may not be in the direct path of Hurricane Ian, we all know the impact a storm can have even on the outskirts. Depending on your proximity to the center of the storm and the size of the wind field, your city could still experience some impacts from Hurricane Ian. Heavy rain will move over the Florida peninsula beginning today. In Miami / Ft. Lauderdale, winds in the tropical downpours will be quite gusty. I think we are all well versed in how to prepare for a storm, it can be difficult to anticipate the aftermath of a storm.

Here are some tips to help make things more manageable after the storm comes.

1. Make sure you have a copy of all insurance documents, including home insurance company contact information in order to be able to reach out to them when you need to report any damage done to your home or business.

2. Document the current state of your home before the storm hits. Film or take images of the home or business, and all items of value. Don't skip window panes and door frames, because this is where a lot of damage may occur. Having this up-to-date footage will make it easier in the case damage does happen.

3. Don't be too eager to get back out after the storm passes, there could be more damage lurking than you may realize. Hazards could be everywhere, broken glass, nails, tree limbs that have yet to fall, and downed power lines or objects in contact with downed lines. Just wait it out a bit more if you can to prevent anything bad from happening.

4. Prepare mentally. Your mental health may be the most important item to manage through a storm, and the mental health of your family. Anticipate that you may lose power, and that there may be some time before things return to normal. Give yourself the tools to get through it if you are alone or with others. Are there meditations you can practice, or other methods that will help you keep calm? Anything that you can do to prepare yourself mentally will certainly pay off during a storm.
